Works in Google Docs

Translate, dictate and shorten —
in the document, in its own style.

One section at a time, in the file everyone already has open: a translation keeps the document’s fonts and numbering, voice typing works outside Chrome, and Short leaves the layout where it was.

✓ A French section, translated where it stands
Comes back as it was

Only the words change

Jarq reads the section the way Docs copies it — every run of text with its own style — and writes the same runs back with new words in them.

  • The document’s fonts and sizes
  • Text colour
  • Highlights
  • Underline
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough
  • Headings
  • Nested numbering
  • Bulleted lists
  • Line spacing

The same job, two ways

One section, not a copy of the whole file

With Tools → Translate document

7steps · a second document
1Tools → Translate document
2Name the copy, pick the language
3Wait for the new document to open
4Find the section you needed
5Copy it
6Switch back and paste it over the original
7Close the copy — it stays in your Drive

Dictation

Voice typing that is not tied to Chrome

Docs has voice typing of its own, in Chrome and nowhere else. Hold ⌥Space in Safari, Arc or Chrome — in the document, in a comment, in the title — and the sentence lands at the cursor with its punctuation.

The numbers below are from the beta, not from the launch.
✓ Said in Safari, typed into the document
Rewriting

Shorten a paragraph without reformatting it

Select it and press Short, Fix or Formal. What comes back is the same paragraph in the document’s own font, size and spacing — shorter, and still part of the page rather than a patch pasted over it.

Goals for the quarter
We are planning, at this point in time, to potentially ship the 1.0 release some time in October, assuming that testing goes well.

We plan to ship 1.0 in October if testing goes well.
✓ Half the words, the document’s own style
Not only translation

Two more things a shared document asks for

Keep both languages

Duplicate a section and translate the copy: the original above, the translation below, both in the document’s style. Handy for a brief a client reads in theirs.

Read a document you may not edit

Opened with view access? Point at the paragraph and press ⌥T — you read it in your language and the file stays exactly as its owner left it. More on pointing.

Good to know

Before you try it here

Does everyone with the document see the translation?
Yes. It is an edit like any other: collaborators see it, and it is in the version history, so the original is one restore away.
Is this the same as Tools → Translate document?
No. That one translates the whole file into a new copy in your Drive. Jarq translates the part you selected, inside the file you have open, and leaves the rest of it alone.
How much can I select at once?
Up to 6,000 characters in one selection, so a long document goes a section at a time. Select more and ⌥T says so instead of translating half.
Where does the text go?
To the translation model and straight back. Nothing is stored and nothing is used for training — the privacy policy says who handles it on the way.
What happens to my clipboard?
Jarq borrows it while Docs takes the paste and then puts back whatever you had copied before.

Try it on your own page

One file, dragged into Applications. It sits in the menu bar and answers a key wherever you are already typing.
